Extension agent leads month-long diabetes class
There are 20.8 million children and adults in the United States, or 7% of the population, who have diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association. An estimated 14.6 million have been diagnosed. Unfortunately, 6.2 million people (or nearly one-third) are unaware that they have the disease. Karen Tucker of the Nacogdoches County Extension office wrapped up a one-month diabetes course Thursday at the C.L. Simon Recreation Center. She said more than 25 people enrolled in the class, and she will offer it again in the Spring. "Most of the people who signed up have either been diagnosed, themselves, or they have a loved one who has been diagnosed," she said. With the rise of Type 2 diabetes in children, Tucker said more school nurses have been signing up to take these types of classes.
